FAQs — UPSC Exam Pattern 2025

What is the UPSC exam pattern for Prelims 2025?
UPSC Prelims has two papers: GS Paper I — 100 objective questions, 200 marks, 2 hours, 1/3 negative marking for each wrong answer; CSAT (Paper II) — 80 objective questions, 200 marks, 2 hours, 1/3 negative marking, qualifying at 33% (66.67 marks). Only GS Paper I marks are counted to shortlist candidates for Mains. Candidates who score below 66.67 in CSAT are disqualified regardless of GS Paper I score.

Approximately 10-13 times the total vacancies are shortlisted for Mains from Prelims. If there are 1000 vacancies, about 10,000-13,000 candidates clear Prelims. The cut-off varies each year based on difficulty. Typically, 5-10 lakh candidates appear for Prelims and about 15,000 clear it.
