UPSC Civil Services Exam — At a Glance

UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to IAS, IPS, IFS, and 20+ other Group A & B central services. The exam has three stages:

Prelims

400 marks (qualifying)

GS Paper I (200 marks, 1/3 negative) + CSAT (200 marks, qualifying at 33%). Objective type. Only GS Paper I marks count for Mains shortlisting.

Stage 2

Mains

1750 merit marks

9 papers total: 2 language qualifying papers (300 marks each) + Essay (250) + GS I–IV (250 each) + Optional I & II (250 each). Descriptive answers.
