Shillong Hosts the 7th Act East Business Show

Why in News

The 7th Act East Business Show was held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong from 25 to 27 March 2025. The Government of Meghalaya and the Indian Chamber of Commerce used the event to connect the Northeast with BBIN and ASEAN markets across sectors such as technology, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism.

What Happened

The 7th Act East Business Show was held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong from 25 to 27 March 2025. The Government of Meghalaya and the Indian Chamber of Commerce used the event to connect the Northeast with BBIN and ASEAN markets across sectors such as technology, agriculture, manufacturing and tourism. In March 2025, the 7th Act East Business Show was inaugurated by Meghalaya Chief Minister (CM) Conrad Sangma in Shillong, Meghalaya. The three-day event, held from March 25th-27th, 2025, was attended by ambassadors and representatives from various countries. The event was organized by the Kolkata (West Bengal)-based Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in partnership with the Government of Meghalaya.

The primary objective of the 7th Act East Business Show is to position Meghalaya as a key trade and investment hub, while strengthening economic ties between India’s Northeast and the BBIN (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal) and ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) regions, under India’s Act East Policy. The Act East Business Show was first launched in 2014, with annual editions held until 2018, followed by a gap before the 2021 edition. Aligned with Meghalaya’s vision of achieving a USD 10 billion economy, the event focused on policy reforms, infrastructure development, entrepreneurship, and grassroots economic networks as key drivers of growth.

The state seeks to capitalize on its strategic location and the Act East Policy framework to attract cross-border investments and improve regional connectivity. Launched in 2014 at the 12th ASEAN-India Summit in Myanmar, the Act East Policy succeeded the Look East Policy (1992) with the aim of strengthening trade and investment relations with Southeast Asian nations.

Background

Meghalaya's development is closely connected with the wider Northeast because transport corridors, river systems, markets, tourism circuits and administrative institutions cross state boundaries. Regional institutions such as the North Eastern Council support coordinated planning, while bilateral state discussions are important for border, flood, power and connectivity issues. Good infrastructure policy requires more than project announcement. Technical feasibility, environmental and social assessment, land and community consultation, financing, inter-governmental coordination, implementation schedules and maintenance determine whether a proposal produces durable benefits.

Challenges and Way Forward

Projects require timely funding, coordination among agencies, environmental safeguards and local consultation. Benefits should reach remote districts and should be measured through jobs, connectivity and service delivery.
