One of the major planks of the programme of self-reliance was Swadeshi or national education. In August 1906, the National Council of Education was established. The Council defined its objectives in this way. . . ‘to organize a system of Education Literary; Scientific and Technical — on National lines and under National control from the primary to the university level. The most important aspect of the movement was a focus on self-reliance or Atma-shakti which led to the development of indigenous industries.
