Major Causes

  • Climate Change: Increased frequency and intensity of sea swells are eroding beaches faster than before.

About Chile
Location:
1. Chile is the southernmost country in the world, the closest to Antarctica.
2. It occupies a long, narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Borders:
1. It shares land borders with Peru to the north, Bolivia to the northeast, Argentina to the east, and the Drake Passage in the far south.
Climate and Topography:
1. The diverse climate of Chile ranges from the world’s driest desert in the north, the Atacama Desert through a Mediterranean climate in the centre, humid subtropical in Easter Island, to an oceanic climate, including alpine tundra and glaciers in the east and south.
2. Chile is located along a highly seismic and volcanic zone, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, due to the subduction of the Nazca and Antarctic plates in the South American plate.
Resources:

1. Copper mining makes up 20% of Chilean GDP and 60% of exports. Overall, Chile produces a third of the world’s copper.
2. Escondida is the largest copper mine in the world, producing over 5% of global supplies.
3. Chile is also rich in mineral resources such as lithium.
